Departing
Whitehorse for Stewart Crossing, Yt
Wednesday,
June 7
So it seems
there may have been a tad more to the water invasion as Aunt Janice found out
this morning when she wound up with a cold shower…or maybe it wasn’t even
related to the issue??? Anyway, the
water heater wasn’t working. Dad and
Uncle Robin did some trouble shooting and then Uncle Robin headed for an RV
repair shop. Of course they were all
overbooked but they suggested he try replacing a small modual they sold him and
voila….back in hot water.
We were all
hooked up so we had headed out for Steward Crossing. The idea was to break up the long ride to
Dawson City and make a side trip into Mayo and Keno on the Silver Trail….a day
trip. As it turns out, we were fortunate
to find the Visitor Center open and a very helpful gentleman who knows the area
well.
The campground we had found on the
Internet is no longer operational. “Some
guy purchased it and turns out he is a drunk.
No motivation to open it up.” Stated Brian at the visitor center with
disgust. He suggested that we drive to
Mayo and stay at either the government campground or the private campground if
we want hookups. That sounded like a
good idea….but….Aunt Janice and Uncle Robin were traveling about 2 hours behind
us and there is absolutely no cell service…or anything for that matter… at
Stewart Crossing other than a bridge, a card lock gas pump and the visitor
shack. The parking lot was spacious so
we just pulled off to the side and waited to let them know our plans. Brian said he closes up at 5 and we didn’t
expect Aunt Janice until 6 so he couldn’t pass along a message.
We drove on
Route 2 today which is also known as Klondike Highway. A departure from the Alaskan Highway. The gal at the visitor center in Watson Lake
named Buttons told us the best…..and the largest….cinnamon buns could be found
at Braeburn Lodge. Be sure to say ‘Hi’
to Steve. This is what we found.
When I asked
how many she sold in a day she said,
‘about 150’ as they have around 3 tour buses that stop by as they travel
from Whitehorse to Dawson City. EGADS!! I didn’t even ask how long or how many ovens
it took to create so many.
Momma and
Dad said the bun was so good they ate the WHOLE thing and didn’t even bring me
a doggie bag. WELL……see if I stay awake
on guard duty tonight!!
Hickory
…….on the
road again
