Fairbanks

Fairbanks, Alaska
June 14-16 Wednesday - Friday

Fairbanks is an area easy to identify with.  It has a 'real' city feel to it and it seems you can find just about anything you need here.  Momma actually had a choice between two Walgreens to get prescriptions filled.  She also had a choice among several hair salons.  It's been a while since we have been a place with so many of the conveniences we have grown accustomed to.  More than one grocery store in addition to a Sam's Club.

When we pulled into the Walmart parking lot, we saw electric boxes in the parking area furthest from the store....the area that RV's usually park in because they need so much room.
Now you may be thinking like us, they even offer electric hook ups for RVers....WRONG.  It is for the employees to use in during the cold winter days.  If they don't plug in their cars, they won't start on those below zero winter days while they are in the store working.  Okay, so maybe this area isn't quite as simple to identify with.  And then the young stylist told Momma she lives in dry cabin.  Can you guess what a 'dry cabin' is?  Hint:  It comes with an outhouse and she takes her showers at the gym.  You got it...no running water in the cabin.

We didn't spend all our time here stocking up on groceries and making use of the available services.  We also took advantage of some of the tours and entertainment available.

We panned for gold while on the Dredge 8 Tour. We each received a 'poke' to pour in our pan.  Together we walked away with $31 of what resembled gold dust/specks.
Our tour guide is a teacher during the school year and an excellent tour guide during the summer sharing the history of mining as we road the train to the mining site.

Dad especially enjoyed touring the dredge.

Did you realize that the oil pipeline is 48 inches in diameter?
This is the pig that keeps the pipeline clean.
The Palace Theatre offered a quality performance complete with comedy, songs and a storyline that shared the history of Fairbanks.  Excellent show!

The Riverboat Cruise

gave us the opportunity to see sled dogs pulling an ATV ...their summer training.
Reindeer at the recreated Native village.

the fish trap that rotates with the current and gathers salmon.
A bush pilot land and taking off on the river.
And homes along the Chena River

And we just couldn't depart Fairbanks without sampling the homemade ice cream from Hot Licks.
Lots to do in Fairbanks....but Denali is calling us.....

Hickory
......on the road again
